Happy Valentine’s Day Maddie!!
If you know me, I have probably mentioned The Band Camino at some point. I stumbled upon their music sometime in 2017 after the release of “Berenstein” and “My Thoughts on You” One day I realized they were by the same artist and decided to check out the rest of their music. From what I had heard of them it was all pretty far on the heartbreak side of the spectrum, until I heard “2/14” which appeared on their “My Thoughts on You” EP that was released in 2016.
Since it’s Valentine’s Day, this is what I want to focus this post on (don’t worry, I will be writing plenty more on this band in the future :) ) Last year I had no plans other than listening to “2/14” with my sister in my room. I wanted to do something so I told her we were going to recreate the album cover (my version pictured above). I posted this on twitter and two of the band members’ moms liked it, which made this even more fun.
Now going back to the very first time I heard this song the mood of the track felt so different from their other music that I had already heard (and loved) With synth beat that feels like it bounces or floats like a balloon throughout the song.
Then the lyrics come in. Wow. The short, slightly clipped, phrases that lead up to the chorus tell about a friendship that is turning into something more, the last line of the pre-chorus “These feelings they keep runnin’ the red,” not only says that he can’t stop how he feels but using “red” reminds us of a color of love.
“I got your heart on my mind,” is the first line of the chorus and for some reason this just really gets me, Mads, and it doesn’t stop because a few lines later it says, “I can’t fall in love tonight,” and wow this is where I first realized it was about valentine’s day, the first few times I heard the song I didn't really think about the title but when it clicked it was way more fun to picture someone avoiding someone because they know they will fall in love.
The second verse is my favorite, mostly for the lyrics but the way the words fall sound so similar to the first verse, which supports the same feel throughout the song. There are no abrupt changes once the song gets started and this helps because it allows you to sit with the feeling for all two minutes and forty three seconds.
I have always loved Valentines for the celebration of love and reminding people that you care for them is so sweet! Also candy and treats are the best to share! Especially as I am growing up, this song gave me another reason to be excited about 2/14, there is something so special about a song titled after a date, time, or even location as it brings the listener even closer to the heart of the song.
Whether you read this on 2/14 or not, I recommend giving The Band CAMINO a listen :)

p.s. “Fool of Myself” is fun to listen to directly after “2/14” as the themes line up and could be interpreted as a part two to "2/14"
