Good Morning Mads! I have a joke for you:
Knock knock.
Who’s there?
Betty.
Betty Who.
yep.
That’s who I want to tell you about today, I was in seventh grade when “Somebody Loves You” came on my Pandora shuffle radio. I fell in love with her slight accent that she maintains while singing and the heartbreak pop that somehow resonated, with my very single self. I started listening to her album Take Me When You Go when it was released in the fall of 2014 which was also my freshman year of high school. I remember doing my world history projects to “Glory Days” and “High Society.”
Born in Australia as Jessica Anne Newham, to an American mother and Australian father, she was raised near Sydney until she moved to Michigan with her parents to pursue music. In an interview with Leigh Nordstrom for WWD Betty revealed her motivation behind using a stage name: “There’s something nice to me about keeping something about me private…something about my life that’s just mine, and for the people outside my work.” She also spoke about her desire to have something about her that remains hers after a performance. Through creating the pastel and gold cotton cloud world of Betty Who there is a unique dreamy quality to her sound that is present in her upbeat anthems as well as her heartbreak songs. With a heavy use of synth pop and fast tempo melodies, she paints heartbreak like a sunset, so full of color and golden light as you are losing the sun. Even in the dark Betty uses that to write love letters to what was, and wringing her heart of every “Just Thought You Should Know.”
Below I’ll organize some songs into “golden hour” that are upbeat and fun. “Sunset” will hold the smiling through the sun set songs, and then others into “after the glow” for more heartache songs.
Golden hour:
High Society
Glory days
All of You
Somebody
Sunset:
Heartbreak Dream
Dreaming About You
Just Like Me
Reunion
After the glow:
Pretend You’re Missing Me
Wanna Be
The Valley
Missing You
California Rain
