Maddie's Holy Trinity of Free Reading Books

Hey Hope!

After getting a few weeks into the semester, I’ve come to the realization that reading classic poems and stories all the time to analyze for my English classes can be interesting and fun, but I need to keep up with some fluffy reading for fun on my own time or I will go insane. Is that dramatic? Of course. Who would’ve thought the solution to not going crazy reading so much would be reading more? Crazy. So for this week, I just thought I’d make a little post about the books I’ve currently been reading this semester. AKA, the three books I am currently obsessed with and would start a fan club for without a second of hesitation. Let’s get into it!

#1 The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

(picture from goodreads.com)

HP, to be honest, I’ve been trying to get my hands on this book for months. Every time I tried to order it online, it was out of stock within minutes. But after reading it, boy do I understand why. This story follows the character Addie LaRue, who is trying to escape her 1700s arranged marriage and wants desperately to see the world. She prays to a god of darkness by mistake, and he grants her more time to see the world in exchange for never being remembered by those she meets. We follow Addie through her three hundred year journey of self discovery while still trying desperately to find a loophole so she can tell her story and be remembered. The writing? Fantastic. I felt like I was reading one long poem, and I was not mad at all about it. Also if you end up reading it, let me know how you feel about the Darkness character that makes the deal with Addie. I know I shouldn’t, but dang, I love that guy. He’s beautiful, powerful, and witty? I’m sold. I can’t help but root for him even though I’m pretty sure he’s a demon. Oh well, everyone has their flaws. Very flowery language and descriptive imagery that creates an overall iconic storyline. Only drawback is that I wasn’t totally in love with the ending, but I was still satisfied. 9/10.

#2 Today, Tonight, Tomorrow by Rachel Solomon

(picture from BarnesandNoble.com)

I literally don’t even know how to start to explain how much I love this book. This story follows a senior in high school named Rowan, who is top of her class in everything. Well, I should rephrase. She shares the top spot in her class with Neil, her arch-nemesis who Rowan has had it out for all four years. Now that their senior year is coming to a close and Rowan has to shut this chapter of her life, she has to come to terms with her true feelings for Neil and also find the courage to pursue her dreams of writing romance novels. I know the whole arch-nemesis trope can be a bit of a hot topic, and some people may think it’s a bit cheesy (I mean, you aren’t wrong) but sometimes the cheesiness is the best part, in my opinion. The banter of these two characters feels so authentic and adorable, and even though at first I was on the fence about it, I love that the story takes place over the course of one day- the day before graduation. The story is so fast paced that it’s an easy read to fall in love with. Oh, and I love Neil with every fiber of my being. I would reread this book again right now just for Neil. He’s so precious. 10/10.

#3 A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas

(picture from goodreads.com)

Sarah J. Maas, gosh darnit, you’ve gone and done it again. You’ve literally wrecked my soul and simultaneously put it back together again. I love this world she’s built. And I love all the characters even more. I cannot stress it enough. In this fourth installment of the series, we see things through Nesta Archeron’s perspective of life in the world of Prythian. This one is kind of tricky to talk about because I don’t want to spoil the people who haven’t read the original trilogy (The A Court of Thorns and Roses series) from Nesta’s sister, Feyre’s perspective. For real though, if you haven’t read that trilogy, do that now. You like romance? Definitely read it. You like action? Yep, you should read it. You like a feel-good character development story? Oh, yeah. This is for you. Side tangent but that series is absolutely one of my all time favorites and I wish I could read it for the first time again. Just amazing writing. Anyways, this book is a bit different, and definitely is a hefty book at a whopping 750 pages, but every person I know who has read it (shoutout Emma and Ethan, hey guys) has finished it in under a week, if that tells you just how good it is. When the three of us have discussed it, we’ve come to the conclusion that it is ridiculously addicting. It sucks you in and you can’t think about anything else until you’ve finished it. That. Is. Iconic. Final verdict? 100/10. No question.

If you do read any of these, please let me know because I would love any excuse to talk about these books. They make me so happy. And I hope they make you happy too :)
