Quarantine Haircut!!

Updated: Sep 13, 2020

Hey Mads!

It has been a WHILE since we last posted, both of us occupied with spring break, and then moving home from college unexpectedly, and now adjusting to life at home while continuing our classes online. Being in the same town again doesn’t really count for much when we can’t hang out and chat.

In addition to our universities being closed due to COVID-19, hair salons have also been closed which messed up my routine hair cut when I come home on break. My sister also needed a haircut so, as I always do, resorted to the internet to find a solution. On YouTube I searched, “at home haircut” and clicked on the second video. It was titled, “Hairdressers Guide to Cutting Your Own Hair and Not Ruining It.” I was sold. (read until the end to see the before and after!)

Within the first minute Brad lets the viewer know that while he always recommends going to a professional, with the current social distancing world, that might not be possible and wants to offer a guide to properly cutting hair.

(note this tutorial is not for our curly haired friends out there!)

  1. Washa damn hair

  2. Apply product

  3. Straighten hair

  4. Part hair how you naturally wear it

  5. Continue that part down the back of your head (dividing hair in two sections)

  6. On one side, find the high point (or apex as Brad calls it) and from there create a part down the side of your head going right behind your ear

  7. Repeat this on the other side (should now have four sections)

  8. Take a front section to the side so that it falls over your shoulder, brush out any tangles and then pull it tight adding an elastic where you want your length to be. -Do not pull to the side or front, the hair should be laying as it would naturally. -After the elastic is placed the hair should continue to lay flat, if there is any weird bubbling you will want to redo that section’s elastic

  9. Repeat this process for the remaining three sections

  10. Make the positioning of the elastics level with each other

  11. THE FUN PART!

  12. Brad is going to be cutting the hair with a “point cutting” technique which means that the scissors are either cutting down towards or up into the hair ( PLZ DON'T snip horizontally!!)

  13. Now is the part to go crazy, if crazy means that you cut the hair up to the point of the elastic

  14. Let the elastics out, and comb your hair

  15. Take your scissors and point cut any sections that need evening up!

For the remainder of the video, Brad goes through how to add long layers to hair to thin up the ends. I stopped with the basic haircut tutorial so if you are interested in learning how to layer your hair at home, the link will be at the bottom.

After watching this my sister agreed to let me try it on her. I followed all of the directions above and it went super well! I was shocked at how little I needed to apply number 15 as her hair came out pretty even. The next day I, with my mom’s help (thanks mom!), applied the tutorial to my own hair. Again, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to follow the steps, as well as how my hair turned out.

A few notes from my own experience:

  • Proper scissors make a huge difference

  • Straight hair is crucial

  • Do this over a waste basket or in a bathtub to help with cleanup

  • Be confident! You can totally do this if quarantine calls for it, but remember if you totally botch it no one will see it for a few weeks anyway!
