Hey Hope!
This week, I thought there was no better thing to bring to this blog than Anne with an E, whose third and ‘final’ season aired on Netflix just a few weeks ago. Anne with an E, created by Moira Walley-Beckett, is truly-in my opinion- one of the best shows out there right now. The show follows Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl who is mistakenly taken to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a pair of siblings who request an orphan boy to help on their 1800s farm in Green Gables. When they discover the gender mix up, Matthew and Marilla have to discover for themselves if they should keep this starry eyed little girl, whose backstory is tragic and her personality vibrant and optimistic.
I wasn’t sure if I would like this show originally, but as I binge watched all of season one...then two...then three (let's be honest), I realized it quickly struck so many heartstrings and made me think more about my own life and how I need to be more present in the small moments that many of us take for granted. Anne’s love and awe of nature, beauty, and relationships made me, the viewer, a little more inspired and grateful to see the things
around me in a new light. The story begins somewhat simple, based heavily on the Anne of Green Gables book series created by Lucy Maud Montgomery in the early 1900s, but slowly strays from the original content and finds its own voice that more closely relates to modern day and issues and topics that are still very prevalent in our world today. This includes things such as sexism, self worth, racism, social justice, LGBTQ+, freedom of speech and gender stereotyping. If anything, the fact that the story takes place over one hundred years ago and we still struggle with many of the issues presented in the show has made me realize there is a lot more work for our world to do, and it has started conversations worldwide about social justice and equality.
While Netflix has said this is the third and final season to air, Anne with an E’s fans- including myself- are not satisfied. Millions of viewers of the show have taken to social media and written articles, showcased artwork, started petitions, and made hashtags like #RenewAnnewithanE go viral in mere minutes to show the dedication and movement that has been inspired because of the powerful messages and characters in this show. While the future of this show is still uncertain, I would recommend everyone to watch the first three seasons of the show on Netflix, because the lessons, character development, and pure heart put into this show in every aspect will leave you wanting more and feeling inspired to make the most of your own life, regardless of your situation or family life or past decisions. This show reminds its viewers to make every day count, see the beauty in the small things, and to remind yourself what it truly feels like to be alive. #RenewAnnewithanE.
