Heyyy Hope! This is my mood for today’s post:
Exactly.
I know we watched this one together over break and we’ve already sent countless tik toks to each other about this, but one of my most recent obsessions is High School Musical the Musical the Series streaming on Disney+. It’s just too good not to write about. I cannot tell you the amount of tweets I liked and retweeted months ago about how HSMTMTS (its a long name, we’ll just say this for short) would be an utter disrespect of the Disney Channel masterpieces that are the High School Musical movies. Well, color me impressed because I was 100% wrong with my snap judgement of this show and I’m more than happy that I was so wrong!
HSMTMTS is not a remake of the movies as some originally thought, but rather it takes place at the real high school that the movie was set in. The show focuses on the high schoolers attending East High in 2019, who find out the school musical is, in fact, High School Musical (the musical). The show mainly follows Nini and Ricky, the next generation’s Troy and Gabriella, and how they navigate their hot and cold relationship while also balancing friendships and putting on a great musical. The actors in this show, while they are young, are crazy talented. In fact, Olivia Rodrigo (Nini) and Joshua Bassett (Ricky) even wrote one of the songs in the show and are now accredited song writers. And they’re both only teenagers! Absolutely insane.
The show also does a great job at balancing the amount of new songs and ones from the movie, with a new song every episode and and at least one from the original film. The writers, camera crew, directors, actors, and everyone involved in this show all do a fabulous job of paying homage to the original film while also paving the way for new generations and keeping the dialogue relevant and progressive in today’s age. New topics such as divorce, sexuality, and nontraditional families that were once taboo for Disney back in 2006 is now embraced and encouraged to normalize and discuss in this show, which I think is so good for more kids to be able to watch this show and feel like they are seeing a part of themselves on the screen. Whether you were singing along to the original High School Musical back in 2006, or if you weren’t even born yet, this show is for you.
No matter your age, this show encapsulates you into the show with its documentary-style camera work and makes you feel like you are right there in East High with these realistic and lovable characters. It can be an outlet that makes you feel seen for exactly where you are in life right now, what you hope it will be, or it can be a distant memory of what it felt like to be in high school. Either way, this show is a beautiful representation of how authentic Disney’s new generational voice is becoming, and I couldn’t be more excited for it.
P.S. The cast just announced that for season 2 of HSMTMTS, the musical they’ll be putting on is… Beauty and the Beast! I’m can't wait to see the different dynamics of the show that will come with season 2. If anyone has Disney's number, feel free to let them know I will be more than willing to play background dancing fork #3 lol
