Love and Other Trainwrecks

Updated: Jun 8, 2022

Hey Hope :)

With midterms and spring break on the mind, I think I speak for every college student when I say stress is through the roof. Since it's our second midterms now as college students (how did time go by that quickly??) I decided to try to relieve some of that inevitable stress by reading something cute and lighthearted. So, last weekend I went to the Cedar Falls Library, got a library card, and picked up the book Love and Other Trainwrecks by Leah Konen. And HP, I know you’d love it just as much as I did. This book follows two eighteen year olds from different states who meet on a train going to the same location, and the train breaks down. They find out that they both need to be in that city by a certain time, so they make a pact to do whatever they have to do in order to get there on time. Oh, and it’s in the middle of a snowstorm. What could go wrong? A lot.

The main characters, Noah and Ammy, are so realistic and funny that it's hard not to enjoy their banter and their internal monologues as we get to see both of their perspectives throughout the book. Ammy is heading to her dad’s second wedding, and Noah is on his way to try and win his ex-girlfriend back. Neither of them want to open up to the other to explain why exactly they’re going to their destinations because-well- they are strangers after all. HP, I think you would love Noah. He is a true romantic, cares very deeply about others, and he loves to read. A perfect book boyfriend if you ask me, and a really interesting character once the book progresses and we get to see more of his backstory. Ammy is a little harder to get through to, and for the first part of the book she seems to be very closed off and cautious. But as the book progresses, we slowly get to learn more about why she acts the way she does and I loved that development. Hope, I really want you to read this book because it made me think of you a little bit. Both characters have to make some very spontaneous decisions and go on an unexpected adventure that gets more complicated and enjoyable as time goes on, and there is no one that I know who is more ready to go on a spontaneous adventure than you, girl. As a whole, this book was a really quick and enjoyable read for me that I thought definitely helped decrease my midterm stress sessions! It was nice to be able to take a break and get back into reading, which is something I’ve loved for so long but don’t always make time for anymore since college life keeps us so busy. Anyway, I think this book is perfect for anyone who is in the mood for a little romance, light hearted banter, and a reminder of what can happen when you decide to go trust your gut and leap into something new! :)
